In Memory of David Hallis:
David was a kind and caring lovable guy. He was the socialite in the room. His big grin brought happiness to others. His many cats over the years brought happiness to him. Spending time at his firepit with country music playing gave him relaxation.
He enjoyed shopping trips to Amish country with his wife Martha to sample and buy cheeses. They planned the route to maximize time and efficiency of purchases. Trips always included picking up items to send to their daughter and son-in-law, in Oregon. Of course, the last stop was for a delicious buffet meal.
David worked hard all his 59 years to ensure a bright future for him and his family. His life was not without struggles including the inability to adjust to a third shift job and sleep schedule. Like other stories, signs of prion disease were overlooked. In his case, maybe thought to be associated with COVID, or attention deficit. Late summer, 2024, he experienced unexplained symptoms due to a fall at home. His walking, speech and uncontrolled arm movements progressed. Treatment was physical, occupational and speech therapy. In less than a month, he was hospitalized. The behavioral changes became outbursts and rage. An MRI and spinal tap were ordered. Near Thanksgiving, we were told it was 99% a prion disease. Devasted with the diagnosis of a rare and incurable disease, hearing David would only have 1-2 months to live. On December 13, we lost our dear, loving David. Your heart and smile will be with us always! As we continue to grieve, we will also continue to promote further research so a cure can be found.
About Strides for CJD:
Strides for CJD is an annual walk/run to raise awareness of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a rare neurodegenerative disease that has no treatment or cure. Through this event, anyone -- anywhere -- can pay tribute to their loved ones and raise funds for the CJD Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, to provide family support, medical education and research programs.
