Veritas Lecture

What does it mean to “see” God? Jesus tells us that “No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father” (John 6:46). And yet we ask that “The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace” (Number 6:36). No one has seen the Father and yet many saw Jesus. He had a face! This is how God operates, through masks. The mask of the incarnation means that God is both invisible to us and yet visible. Hidden but revealed.

But what about heaven? What will heaven be like. It is more than “seeing” God. We will have the fullness of love. We will know as we have been known (1 Corinthians 13:12). We will know fully. We will know love, peace, justice, freedom, and truth fully. We will even know ourselves fully. No longer will we look in a dull mirror but will fully see. No longer will we only see masks but the real deal. Can you imagine?

In this Veritas Lecture, we will contemplate seeing God in heaven and what that will mean but also how we receive drops of heaven here on earth. We will take a cue for Paul’s great love chapter: “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:11-12).
