Short biography
Thomas Steyaert worked on several projects with Ultima Vez/Wim Vandekeybus (Brussels, BE), KVS (Royal Flemish Theatre), Cirk La Putyka (Prague, CZ), East West Theatre Company (Sarajevo, BIH), MESS International Theatre Festival (Sarajevo, BIH), SARTR (Sarajevo War Theatre, BIH), BNP Zenica (BIH) and Company Below Zero (Stockholm, S).
Together with Raul Maia, one of his close artistic partners, he develops a project that explores the artistic practice and multiple output potentiality of non-representational physical communication between performers. Within the same context he explores his individual approach and created several works in Europe and abroad.
Together with Benjamin Bajramović, Thomas recently founded Station 3, a platform for research and development of artistic practises, workshops and performative happenings.
Workshop
1. Dynamic movement phrases
We will explore a series of Ultima Vez-like prestructured movement phrases where strength, flexibility and technical skills merge.
2. Non-representational physical communication
For nearly 14 years now Thomas Steyaert has been investigating what he calls "non-representational physical communication" between performers. At the origin of his artistic practice there was a deep-rooted wish of not wanting to represent or re-enact any movement on stage. He was fascinated with the edgy interaction existing in sport games, with its clear rules and unpredictable outcome, where everything is discussed and fought for in real-time. He started wondering what would happen if such forms of interaction were integrated in an art context, without the objective goals of a game, but adopting subjective goals instead.
Thomas started developing practices aimed at achieving a sustainable feeling of dependency between performers, searching for a sense of cause and effect that would lead to the experience of physical communication. The emerging ever-regenerating flow of physical information resulting from his practice seemed to create multiple meanings, levels of instruction and sensations both for the performers and the audience alike. Through time, this playful research, based on the methodology of movement scores, led to the creation of physical languages that allow performers to engage in “real” physical discussions and create performances by framing those discussions into various artistic contexts. Any form or aesthetic was possible as long as performers stayed faithful to the physical communication practice. By applying his existing methods to a wider group of participants, Thomas creates performative experiences based on “ non-representational physical communication” practices. In the latest phase of his work, materials/objects are introduced as mediators of the communication between the performers, creating hybrid sculptural elements between performers and the activated object.
