About the event

League of Women Voters Moscow Constitution Day Speaker Series presentation with Dr. Kylee Britzman
The Latah County Historical Society, University of Idaho Library, and the League of Women Voters Moscow invites you to a Constitution Day Speaker Series presentation with Dr. Kylee Britzman entitled “Seeking the Possible over the Perfect: Compromises, Voting Rights, and the U.S. Constitution.” This free public event will begin at noon on Wednesday, September 17th at the University of Idaho Library.

The U.S. Constitution emerged not from idealistic perfection, but from pragmatic compromise among delegates with competing visions for the new nation. Britzman’s talk will examine how the Founders navigated fundamental disagreements about representation, federalism, and individual rights to create a workable framework for government. We will explore how the Constitution's approach to voting rights—from its original limitations to subsequent expansions through amendments and legislation—reflects this ongoing tension between democratic ideals and political realities.

Kylee Britzman is an associate professor of political science at Lewis-Clark State College. She moved to Moscow in 2018 after completing her PhD at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on voting behavior, political rhetoric, and social movement strategies. She serves as the president for the League of Women Voters Moscow.

This presentation is held in conjunction with the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,” on display at the University of Idaho Library until October 3rd. “Voices and Votes” is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and state humanities councils nationwide. It’s tenure at the University of Idaho is made possible by the Idaho Humanities Council and is based on a larger exhibition by the National Museum of American History. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.
