Calligraphy Basics

This four-week course offers a welcoming introduction to the art of calligraphy, drawing inspiration from Veiko Kespersaks’ Calligraphy in 24 Hours (used with the author’s permission). While the book lays out a full program of twenty-four one-hour lessons, our class will highlight key elements as an accessible starting point.

Together with teaching artist Chris Carfaro, we’ll explore the fascinating history of penmanship while practicing with broad-edged nibs to create Italic and Gothic letterforms. From there, we’ll move into the evolution of the pointed pen and quill, learning the foundations of English Roundhand, Copperplate, and ornamental scripts.

Whether you’re drawn to the beauty of formal lettering, want to elevate your holiday correspondence, or simply wish to try something new, this class offers an inspiring introduction to the timeless art of calligraphy.
