Castle Walk, Morpeth, United Kingdom
Join building restoration charity the Landmark Trust to explore Morpeth Castle, Saturday 11 - Sunday 12 April 2026
Free public open days are an opportunity to see inside this local landmark and learn more about its history and restoration as part of the annual Northumbrian Gathering. This is a family friendly weekend welcoming all ages.
The Landmark we know today as Morpeth Castle was originally a gatehouse built at the entrance to the castle from which it gets its name. Morpeth Castle sits on a hill with fine views of the town and the River Wansbeck.
Free admission, information on the building's history and children's activity sheets will be available. Well-behaved dogs are permitted in the castle.
What's On
We'll be joined by some of our local friends again this year across the weekend: The Ran Tanners music duo, John Sadler’s Time Bandits historical reenactors and historic dancers.
Founded in 1965, The Landmark Trust is one of Britain's leading building conservation charities. With the help of our supporters, we save historic buildings in danger of being lost forever. We sensitively restore such 'Landmarks' and offer them a new future by making them available to everyone for self-catering holidays. The lettings income from the 200 extraordinary buildings in our care supports their maintenance and survival in our landscape, culture and society. Each time you choose to stay in a Landmark, you are directly contributing to its survival.
Morpeth Castle is situated a short walk up hill from the town of Morpeth and near to Morpeth train station.
There is no parking at the castle. Limited parking is available on the drive leading up to the castle or there is ample parking is available in the town with a scenic 10-minute walk up to the castle through Carlisle park.
Making a small donation as part of your free open day ticket helps us ensure that we can continue our work to rescue historic buildings at risk. As a charity, the Landmark Trust relies on donations to support our work. We couldn’t have rescued over 200 Landmarks without the support of people like you.
Your donation could help train the craftspeople needed to restore buildings like this, or it could offer opportunities to young people to experience history first-hand, through our open days and free stays for study groups.
Due to the historic nature of our buildings we have a limited capacity for our Open Day events. You may therefore be asked to wait a short time while other visitors finish their visit. Whilst booking is not essential, priority will be given to those who have booked in advance. Thank you for your co-operation.
Please note that due to the nature of our historic buildings and places, some may not be suitable for those with limited mobility or certain disabilities as there is limited parking at the Castle and cobbled stones in the castles courtyard and steps into the castle.
We do all we can to enable access wherever possible; for further information or if you have any access concerns that you’d like to discuss before visiting, please contact our Booking Enquiries team on 01628 825925 or Ym9va2luZyB8IGxhbmRtYXJrdHJ1c3QgISBvcmcgISB1aw==. The Booking Office is open Mon to Fri - 9am to 5pm.
