Floor talk: Unfolding – First Nations Works on Paper

Join us for an engaging floor talk with co-curator Stephanie Sacco and exhibiting Mornington Peninsula–based First Nations artist Dominic White as they introduce Unfolding: First Nations Works on Paper, MPRG’s highly anticipated summer exhibition.

Stephanie and Dominic will talk through the exhibition’s overarching themes, exploring how contemporary First Nations artists are using works on paper to speak to identity, Country, memory and cultural continuity. They will focus on a few key artworks (of the 97 selected from the MPRG collection) offering insights into process, materiality and the stories embedded within each piece.

This is a wonderful opportunity to deepen your understanding of the diverse practices represented in Unfolding and to experience the exhibition through the perspective of those who shaped and contributed to it.

This is a free event, however please register your attendance so we know you are joining us.

Note also that Nuno's Coffee van will be open for light refreshments before & after the talk.

DOMINIC WHITE

Dominic White is a Palawa, Trawoolway man and a descendant of the Tyereelore through his birth mother’s family. Adopted as a child, he has been engaged in an ongoing process of reclaiming his heritage and reconnecting with Tebrakunna Country.

A multidisciplinary artist, White explores themes of connection, observation, responsibility and obligation across a range of media. His practice critically examines cultural, historical and contemporary colonial interactions with First Nations people.

He is currently a PhD candidate at the RMIT School of Art, with research focused on Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being, Yarning methodologies, decolonisation frameworks, praxis and socially engaged art practice.

Trained as a printmaker, White’s work spans contemporary printmaking, sculpture, photography, performative actions and contemporary jewellery and design, often informed by the material and cultural context of each project.

Based on Bunurong/Boonwurrung Country on the Mornington Peninsula, he is a father of two and teaches art alongside his artistic practice.
