Mai Khôi is a singer, composer, and activist. She rose to stardom in 2010 after winning the Vietnam Television Song and Album of the Year awards. Increasingly uncomfortable submitting her work to government censors, she nominated herself for the National Assembly elections on a pro-democracy platform. Her campaign sparked a nationwide debate about political participation and culminated in a meeting with Barack Obama in May 2016. In retaliation, she had her concerts raided, was evicted from multiple residences, and was detained and interrogated by the police. Since 2019, Mai Khôi has lived in exile in the USA. In recognition of her work at the intersection of art and activism, Khôi was awarded the 2018 Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent and the 2022 Four Freedoms Award for Freedom of Speech.
Mark Micchelli is a composer, pianist, scholar, and educator whose work hybridizes contemporary classical, jazz, and popular music idioms. Recent projects include producing the multimedia autobiography of Vietnamese singer-activist Mai Khôi, writing an article on George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization as it relates to twelve-tone music, hosting a series of house concerts under the moniker “Stage MK,” and releasing an album of jazz standards for solo piano and improvising computer. Mark has accrued degrees and awards from several institutions of higher education, and his music has been presented at venues such as Joe’s Pub (NYC), the Smithsonian Museum (Washington, DC), and La Fenice (Venice, Italy). Mark currently serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Composition at West Virginia University.
Chris Haddox is a Logan, West Virginia born and raised songwriter/singer/multi-instrumentalist who is now based or of Morgantown, West Virginia. He writes and sings his voluminous collection of songs about (to quote him) “religion, firearms, courthouse squares, goats on trampolines, shoes, fiddles, and hurricanes”—whatever catches his eye. He deftly combines humor, sarcasm, and blunt honesty to create songs that are accessible and relatable to a wide variety of audiences. Chris released his first album on March 25, 2022 at the age of 61. By April it had climbed to #11 on the Folk Alliance International chart, with all tracks from the album receiving steady airplay on 60 or so stations across the U.S., and a few further afield.
