A FREE COMMUNITY EVENT to celebrate 60 years of the Grateful Dead and highlight the restoration and beautification of a part of downtown Morgantown by devoted groups of volunteers and community organizations.
The Grateful Dead’s early park concerts helped cement their place as a must-see live act, creating a space for community engagement and giving people from all walks of life a chance to see the band known for playing evening shows that often didn’t finish until early the following morning. One of those legendary park shows happened on Sunday, September 28, 1975 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to celebrate the release of the band’s album Blues for Allah and a return to touring after a hiatus that made the future of the band seem uncertain. From there, the Grateful Dead continued to make music and tour until Jerry Garcia’s death on August 9, 1995, 30 years from their beginnings. As the name of the song “The Music Never Stopped” from Blues For Allah suggests, the remaining members have continued honoring the band’s legacy for still another 30 years with Dead & Company recently selling out three nights back at Golden Gate Park and an incredible residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
The beautiful new mural visible from the South High Street Bridge only begins to tell you what’s going on below. In an ongoing effort, the dedicated volunteers of Morgantown Forward have organized a months-long cleanup along a large section of Deckers Creek near the river. Once-overgrown berms and embankments have been cleared and replaced with wood chips, allowing for more clear sightlines between the access roads, the rail trail, and the creek. Literal tons of trash have been hauled away from both sides of the banks and the creek itself. Brightly colored abstract murals now cover the formerly graffitied bridge pillars. In July, the new Mushroom Trail was opened along the northern bank of the creek, a clever scenic route for families to explore. On August 9, the new 6500 square foot mural honoring the Deckers Creek Watershed, "The Wild Thread of High Street" was officially dedicated, a project organized by Main Street Morgantown. All of these recent projects build on the stewardship of the Mon River Trails Conservancy (MRTC) and 30 years of environmental work by Friends of Deckers Creek (FoDC). These groups continue to work toward making the area clean and safe for the people of Morgantown and visitors to discover and explore.
Access the Mushroom Trail area on foot from Foundry St. by the Sheetz on University Ave., or at the end of the South High Street Bridge, or directly from the Rail Trail.
