The Prairie Fire Chapter will be hosting a Flag Retirement Ceremony for the residents of the Montevideo Veterans Home on Friday, January 17, at 2:00 PM.
The ceremony will last about 30–45 minutes and will be held mostly indoors so it’s comfortable for the residents. Anyone or any unit that would like to participate is welcome.
The focus of the ceremony is to honor each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. During the program, residents will hold folded flags ready for retirement. A Scout will receive each flag, and as the stripes are carefully removed from the blue field, a short reading honoring that branch of service will be shared. One flag will be retired for each branch.
We will also prepare another flag for retirement while a roll call of fallen veterans is read. A small choir will provide a few appropriate songs, and the ceremony will conclude with TAPS.
After the indoor portion, the prepared flags will be retired by flame outdoors, weather permitting. I’ve already been in contact with the local fire department, and they’ve agreed to help with the outdoor fire.
The indoor portion of the ceremony is a great opportunity for Cub Scouts to participate. Older Scouts and adults will take care of the outdoor portion involving the flame.
