About the event

UM CSI Spring Workshop: Behavioral Threat Assessment and Intervention
Continuing Education workshop on "Behavioral Threat Assessment, Management, and Crisis Intervention: Framework and Best Practices".

About this Event

Clinicians are consistently being called upon to help the people they work with navigate quickly changing environments and broken systems. As client acuity and the complexity of mental health concerns continue to rise, clinicians find themselves frequently having to manage and respond to crises and high-risk situations. Assessing and managing these concerning and threatening behaviors can leave clinicians feeling overwhelmed and ill-equipped. This workshop will provide a survey of systematic and structured frameworks for identifying, assessing, and working with individuals who may pose a risk of violence. Topics will include:

  • The critical role that clinicians play in preventing acts of violence
  • Distinguishing between targeted and affective violence
  • Current models for understanding and conceptualizing violence
  • Risk factors, warning signs, underlying behaviors, and mitigating factors
  • Evidenced-based models for assessing risk of violence
  • Overlap between assessing risk to self and risk to others
  • Structured professional judgement tools
  • Best practices for managing concerning and threatening behaviors

Learning Objectives - By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the clinician’s role in violence prevention, including key distinctions between targeted and affective violence and contemporary frameworks for understanding violent behavior.
  2. Identify and evaluate risk factors, warning signs, and mitigating variables associated with violence risk, including areas of overlap between risk to self and risk to others.
  3. Apply evidence-based and structured professional judgment models to assess and manage concerning or threatening behaviors in clinical practice.
