The Southeast Environmental Association (SEA), in partnership with the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action, invites you to an important community presentation with Kyle Knysh, Surface Water Biologist, who has been leading research into cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and water quality challenges across Prince Edward Island.
Over the past couple of years, SEA and other watershed groups have worked with Kyle and his predecessor to collect water samples, monitor pond and lake conditions and study algal blooms and anoxic (low-oxygen) conditions. These issues are a factor in freshwater bodies across PEI — including MacLure’s Pond, which will be a special focus of this session.
What to Expect:
* Background and history of cyanobacteria on PEI.
* Results from recent water quality sampling and monitoring efforts.
* Preliminary research on freshwater algae bloom and low-oxygen occurrence and frequency.
* Discussion on the role of climate change in water quality conditions.
* Expectations around recurrence and long-term impacts.
* Next steps in research, monitoring, and management.
Community Engagement:
This presentation is not only an opportunity to learn — it’s also a chance for residents and stakeholders to:
* Ask questions directly to biologists.
* Share your own experiences and observations.
* Explore opportunities to participate in data collection efforts.
* Provide input on future planning for managing local lakes and ponds.
