Three years ago, Gianna Marzilli Ericson had a dream which gave her an idea: a twin fiddle album with Rebecca Rose Weiss, recorded in the Montague Common Hall. After an incredibly wonderful (and challenging) three-year adventure experimenting with twin fiddle arranging and recording, we are excited to share our album and some tunes from it with you live! These are tunes we've written, tunes we love, recorded at all hours of the day and night, ice cream-powered, fireworks-interrupted, and cricket-witnessed!

For part of the concert, Henry Yoshimura (guitar, vocals) will join Gianna & Rebecca (fiddles) to play as the band Joy Factor, bringing not only more tunes but also Henry's original songs. More about us below. We can't wait!

About the band:
Joy Factor is a contra dance band from Massachusetts featuring Gianna Marzilli Ericson and Rebecca Rose Weiss on fiddles and Henry Yoshimura on guitar. They play original tunes alongside Celtic, Quebecois, and old time repertoire, all with a decidedly New England accent.
Gianna and Rebecca delight in a shared love of twin fiddling and late night tune writing, as well as a shared belief in fiddle as a rhythm instrument. Henry brings his skillful melodic support to the mix, plus the occasional original song. Together, they bring dynamic harmonies, driving chords, deep appreciation of the dance, and gratitude for playing together to every set. Between them all, they’ve played for dances around the country with a variety of collaborators. As a trio, they like to see how many different geographical points they can travel from for a gig. Join them at a dance or concert and you’ll come to understand the origin of the band’s name!

"What a JOY it was to experience the uplifting, intricate, and soulful music; my feet are still tapping!” -Ilana, recent concert attendee

More about us:

Gianna's first musical endeavors involved taping numbers to the keys on her step-dad's piano. Upon discovering the newly modified instrument, her mom exclaimed, "Well, I guess it's time for lessons!" A few years later, Gianna's step-mom brought her to a Pioneer Valley contra dance, where she fell in love with dance music and promised herself she'd learn to play it. Eventually, she traded classical piano for fiddle, and the rest is history. When not playing or writing tunes, she works as a UX designer, serves on the board of Northeast Heritage Music Camp, tries to grow veggies, and hangs out with her family.

Henry has been backing fiddle music and laying down the rhythm and texture for traditional dancing – contra, square, Cajun – for over two decades. In addition to playing with Joy Factor, he tours extensively with the Dead Sea Squirrels. When Henry is not playing music, you will likely find him in a joyous reverie on the dance floor. The sudden pandemic-induced halt of the dance scene in March 2020 motivated Henry to start a new music project – song writing – which marries his skills as a guitarist with his day-job skills as a writer of energy policy.

Rebecca grew up in Maryland, raised by her parents and a variety of folk musicians. Her first contra dance tour involved being adopted by the Polka Pants Band (Andrea Hoag, David Kaynor, Charlie Pilzer) for a road trip around the country wearing poofy pants. Now she is based in Western MA and has been following around New Englanders in hopes of absorbing not only rock solid contra rhythm but also winter driving tips. She especially likes to play harmony fiddle, compose tunes and poems at random moments, and help other people learn how to connect with each other through music (often through anchoring community dance bands or teaching workshops). www.rebeccaroseweiss.com
