Step back in time at The William Harris Homestead Museum & Education Center on Saturday, September 6th.
The homestead is open to the public on the first Saturday of each month, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm with guided tours offered on the hour 10:00 - 1:00. We are pleased to announce that members of the Apalachee River Settlers Group have fun and educational demonstrations planned for each month.
September’s special event will portray the daily work required to keep a homestead running in 1865, with a focus on household chores and fiber arts such as spinning, weaving, and natural dyeing. Learn how a family of twelve lived and labored together on a 500-acre farm.
Explore the outbuildings on the property, including the smokehouse, salt house, corn crib, blacksmith shop, and tool shop. Visit the homestead’s working gardens—featuring plants used for food, cooking, and natural dyeing—and see how these vital spaces supported everyday life.
Demonstrations throughout the day will bring to life the skills, rhythms, and resilience of rural Georgia families during a time of great transition.
