GALAXIE XII - CHARGE INVISIBLE
Under the direction of Acadian artist Mélanie Paulin, fifteen women from Algeria, Bolivia, Cameroon, Canada, France, Madagascar, and Morocco took part in the 12th edition of Galaxie, a project led by the Centre d’accueil et d’accompagnement francophone des immigrants du Sud-Est du Nouveau-Brunswick (CAFi).
Charge invisible was built around the theme of women’s mental load — that intangible weight that so many carry in their daily lives. Over the course of four months, these women, most of whom come from immigrant backgrounds, engaged in a collective and original creative process: the making of textile sculptures using recycled fabrics and chicken wire.
To give form to this invisible weight, each participant shaped a textile “rock” — a symbolic yet concrete object of what she carries within. Together, they also created collective rocks, placed at the base of the assemblage, supporting the weight of the individual works. The repetitive gesture of cutting, braiding, and covering became a form of meditation. Choices of textures, colors, coverings, or openings reflect each woman’s singular relationship to this load: exhaustion, chaos, tenderness, resistance, solidarity, or the need for space.
The result: a collective exploration, in the form of textile sculptures, of what relentlessly inhabits their minds — tasks, expectations, responsibilities, the forgetting of oneself. All the things not always spoken aloud, yet borne in silence.
First presented in a one-night ephemeral exhibition at Salle Bernard-LeBlanc in the Aberdeen Cultural Centre, the project now unfolds as a gallery installation, extending the encounter with both the works and the women who created them.
This project is yet another reminder that art is a powerful lever for integration — a space of expression where women, whether from here or elsewhere, can reclaim their voices, tell their stories differently, and forge connections.

GALAXIE XII - CHARGE INVISIBLE
Sous la direction de l’artiste acadienne Mélanie Paulin, quinze femmes originaires de l’ Algérie, de la Bolivie, du Cameroun, du Canada, de la France, de Madagascar et du Maroc ont participé à la 12ᵉ édition de Galaxie, un projet mené par le Centre d’accueil et d’accompagnement francophone des immigrants du Sud-Est du Nouveau-Brunswick (CAFi).
Charge invisible s’est construit autour du thème de la charge mentale des femmes — ce poids intangible que tant d’entre elles portent au quotidien. Pendant quatre mois, ces femmes majoritairement issues de l’immigration ont pris part à un processus de création collectif et inédit : la réalisation de sculptures textiles à partir de tissus recyclés et de grillage de cage à poule.
Pour donner forme à cette charge invisible, chaque participante a façonné une « roche » textile — un objet symbolique et concret de ce qu’elle porte en elle. Ensemble, elles ont également créé des roches collectives, disposées à la base de l’amas, soutenant le poids des œuvres individuelles. Le geste répétitif de couper, tresser, et recouvrir est devenu une forme de méditation. Les choix de textures, de couleurs, de recouvrements ou d’ouvertures traduisent chacun un rapport singulier à cette charge : épuisement, chaos, tendresse, résistance, solidarité ou besoin d’espace.
Le résultat : une exploration collective, sous la forme de sculptures textiles, de ce qui habite sans relâche leur esprit — les tâches, les attentes, les responsabilités, l’oubli de soi. Tout ce qu’elles ne disent pas toujours à voix haute, mais qu’elles portent en silence.
Présenté d’abord lors d’une exposition éphémère d’un soir à la Salle Bernard-LeBlanc du centre culturel Aberdeen, le projet se déploie aujourd’hui sous forme d’installation en galerie, prolongeant la rencontre avec les œuvres et celles qui les ont créées.
Ce projet est une fois de plus la preuve que l’art est un puissant levier d’intégration, un espace d’expression où les femmes,qu’elles soient d’ici ou d’ailleurs, peuvent reprendre la parole, se raconter autrement et créer des liens.

À propos de l’artiste
Mélanie Paulin (elle) est une artiste acadienne basée à Moncton, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Travaillant le textile, l’estampe et l’installation, sa pratique s’ancre dans le soin, le féminisme et l’expérience vécue. Elle adopte des processus lents et intentionnels pour mettre en valeur le travail créatif des femmes et souligner l’impact environnemental des textiles, transformant souvent des matériaux récupérés en nouvelles formes.
Son travail dépasse l’atelier par l’engagement communautaire et la création collaborative, favorisant le dialogue sur la durabilité, la matérialité et les histoires que recèle le tissu. Avec une formation en microbiologie environnementale (PhD) et un diplôme du programme Foundation Visual Arts du New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, elle relie science et art tout en créant un espace qui honore à la fois le soin humain et écologique.
About the artist
Mélanie Paulin (she/her) is a contemporary Acadian artist based in Moncton, New Brunswick. Working with textiles, printmaking and installation, her practice is rooted in care, feminism, and lived experience. She embraces slow, intentional processes to highlight the creative labour of women and the environmental impact of textiles, often reconstructing discarded materials into new forms.
Her work extends beyond the studio through community engagement and collaborative making, fostering dialogue on sustainability, materiality, and the stories embedded in cloth. With a background in environmental microbiology (PhD) and a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design’s Foundation Visual Arts program, she bridges science and art while creating space that honors both human and ecological care.
