Roots & Identity, and the value of feeling that you belong
Have you ever thought about your roots? For me, roots mean much more than just your nationality, that of your parents, or your family system. I hear many people say, "I have no roots." Have you considered that your roots are shaped by your parents and the family you are a part of? Your cultural and ethnic backgrounds, where you grew up, your financial status, and the various homes and places you've lived all contribute to who you are. How has all this impacted you? How do you view yourself, what opportunities do you seize, do you feel the need to prove yourself, and do you experience life as something that’s given to you or as something you’re always struggling for?
The same goes for identity. Your identity is the "I" that you present to the world. The norms and values you set for yourself, how you recognize yourself, and who you truly want to be. The downside is that your identity can be shaped by the outside world. Your roots can completely determine your identity, preventing you from walking your own path, living your authentic self, and thus inhibiting your zest for life. You may not be living from your own place, your own "I." On the other hand, to shape your identity from within, systemic work (a constellation) can be a helpful tool to feel that you belong.
Regardless of your current situation regarding your roots and identity, together we can work towards taking the first step in claiming your own place in your life.
On Fridag, September 19, you are welcome to explore your theme during the (family) constellation afternoon: Roots & Identity. In my POP-UP practice space at the Geulstraat 9, Amsterdam.
