PREDAVANJE/ LECTURE | Rana Anani: Skozi zrcalo Gaze/ Gaza, Through the Looking Glass

LetoΕ‘njo mednarodno Poletno Ε‘olo, ki jo skupaj organiziramo Moderna galerija (Ljubljana), Muzej afriΕ‘ke umetnosti (Beograd) in Muzej sodobne umetnosti Črne gore (Podgorica), bo odprlo javno predavanje palestinske kustosinje in pisateljice π‘πšπ§πž π€π§πšπ§π’.

V predavanju z naslovom πΊπ‘Žπ‘§π‘Ž π‘ π‘˜π‘œπ‘§π‘– π‘§π‘Ÿπ‘π‘Žπ‘™π‘œ Anani preučuje, kako ni več meja med oroΕΎarsko in zabavno industrijo. Pri tem se opira na serijo filmov Haruna Farockija 𝐸𝑦𝑒/π‘€π‘Žπ‘β„Žπ‘–π‘›π‘’ (π‘‚π‘˜π‘œ/π‘ π‘‘π‘Ÿπ‘œπ‘—) in na delo Mahmouda Al Haja πΆπ‘œπ‘›π‘‘π‘Ÿπ‘œπ‘™ π΄π‘›π‘Žπ‘‘π‘œπ‘šπ‘¦ (π΄π‘›π‘Žπ‘‘π‘œπ‘šπ‘–π‘—π‘Ž π‘›π‘Žπ‘‘π‘§π‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘Ž) ter na njune srhljive odmeve v genocidu v Gazi.

Farocki prikazuje, kako razne vojske od zalivske vojne (1991) za usposabljanje vojakov uporabljajo estetiko videoiger in virtualne resničnosti, tako da je nasilje abstrahirano v čiste, oddaljene simulacije. Al Haj je v delih napovedal, kako bo ta abstrakcija postala grozljiva resničnost; danes so človeőka življenja v Gazi zreducirana na podatkovne točke, toplotne slike in zemljevide nadzornih kamer.

Predavanje predstavi tezo, da orožarska industrija vse bolj črpa iz spekulativne domiőljije videoiger in znanstvenofantastičnih produkcij, ne le za vojaőka orodja, ampak za celotne vizije vojskovanja. Tehnologije, ki so bile nekoč omejene na zaslone in fikcijo, zdaj oblikujejo resnične ubijalske stroje, kot so govoreči droni in igrificirani sistemi za ciljanje.

Predavanje v prepletu umetnostne kritike, popularnih distopij in resničnega življenja v Gazi zastavlja vpraőanja: Kakőno prihodnost ustvarjamo z zamiőljanjem? Je postala znanstvena fantastika načrt za razvoj ubijalskih strojev? In kako bi lahko ponovno uvedli etično odgovornost v dobi mehaniziranih zločinov proti človeőtvu, posredovanih na zaslonih?

This year's international Summer School, jointly organized by Moderna galerija (Ljubljana), the Museum of African Art (Belgrade), and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro (Podgorica), will be opened by a public lecture by the Palestinian curator and author π‘πšπ§πš π€π§πšπ§π’.

This talk examines the collapse of boundaries between the arms and entertainment industries, drawing on Harun Farocki’s 𝐸𝑦𝑒/π‘€π‘Žπ‘β„Žπ‘–π‘›π‘’ film series, and Mahmoud Al Haj’s πΆπ‘œπ‘›π‘‘π‘Ÿπ‘œπ‘™ π΄π‘›π‘Žπ‘‘π‘œπ‘šπ‘¦ body of work, and their disturbing echoes in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Farocki traced how, since the Gulf War (1991), militaries have adopted the aesthetics of video games and virtual reality to train soldiers, abstracting violence into clean, distant simulations. Al Haj’s works predicted how this abstraction has become a horrifying reality today, as human lives in Gaza are reduced to data points, thermal images, and surveillances maps.

The lecture argues that the arms industry increasingly draws from the speculative imagination of video games, but also sci-fi media productions, borrowing not just military tools but entire visions of warfare. Technologies, once confined to screens and fiction, now shape real-world killing machines such as talking drones and gamified targeting systems.

By weaving together artistic critique, popular dystopias, and lived realities in Gaza, this talk asks: What kind of future are we imagining into being? Has science fiction become a blueprint to serve developing these killing machines? And how might we reclaim ethical accountability in an age of mechanized, screen-mediated crimes against humanity?
