Giving Voice to the Moving Body - Vocal Improvisation for Movement Practitioners

This workshop invites dancers and movers to explore the voice as a natural extension of the moving body, opening pathways into spontaneous collective sounding and singing.
In many movement practices, the voice is often left behind. Here, we bring it back—through impulse, sensation, rhythm, and relationship.

We will approach vocal improvisation in a process-based, exploratory way, where sound arises from movement and shared presence. The goal is not performance or polish, but connection: to the body, to others, and to the moment.

Through guided explorations and collective play, we will:
· awaken the voice through breath, vibration, and physical resonance
· let movement generate vocal impulses
· explore rhythm, tone, and phrasing through the body
· co-create spontaneous vocal structures in small and large groups
· support each other in listening, responding, and building together

The workshop will be mainly led by musician, vocal artist and facilitator Guillermo Rozenthuler, who proposed a term The Singing Village, which emerged through his experiences with groups of vocal improvisers, describing the many ways to relate, co-create, and access what he calls spontaneous collective song.

“The Singing Village recognizes everyone’s innate musicality and capacity to take part in a musical experience. It acknowledges that the origins of what we now call ‘vocal improvisation’ lie in the cellular memory of humanity and the diverse ancestral musical practices that were part of the fabric of human life on Earth for thousands of years.
The Singing Village encompasses my vocal improvisation pedagogy and philosophy of work. It describes the processes of participants in collective gatherings and serves as a metaphor for how I understand the potential of voice and vocal improvisation as a social practice and technology of being—from individual research to working with communities.” (Guillermo Rozenthuler)

At the Singing Village:
- every voice is valued and honoured, anyone can belong regardless of their skill level or confidence
- everyone contributes to the flow and shares responsibility for the outcome
- the music rises and falls away, just like life itself
- anyone can start a musical idea, offering it as a gift and sharing part of themselves
- being part of the musical core, the structure that supports and sustains the music,
is as essential as adding your strong personal expression
- no one takes sole credit for the music, and no one is above those who follow their ideas
- if a musical proposition doesn’t echo, it fades away and the music keeps moving

The workshop will also feature two guest facilitators; Neža Pele and Jaka Škapin who will bring their own unique approaches to vocal and movement-based exploration.
