Functional vs Performance - CI in different colors

In this class before jam, we explore the vibrant spectrum between functionality and performance in Contact Improvisation.

What makes a movement functional? When does it become performative? How do we shift between the two, and can they coexist in the same dance?

We will investigate how intention, attention, and presence shape the way we move and how we are perceived. We’ll dive into technical aspects such as support, momentum, and weight-sharing—then stretch these foundations toward expression, composition, and the poetics of the moment.

Let’s meet on the dance floor, where function can be beautiful, and performance can be honest.
