Running December 5 - 21, 2025
The deadliest storm in Minnesota history began on an unseasonably warm day in November, 1940: a holiday that drew crowds downtown with barely a coat and scores of duck hunters out on the water with high hopes and not much else.
In Minneapolis, two young couples - next door neighbors and friends - enjoy the long weekend and mild weather. The men head off to hunt while the women make plans to attend the holiday parade downtown, unaware of the sudden calamity headed their way.
With little warning, temperatures plunged and winds howled, engulfing the Midwest with one of the most severe storms ever recorded. Survival became uncertain as countless people found themselves stranded, unprepared for winter's fury.
When the storm passed, six states were left to dig out of the drifts and count their dead. Based on historic records and the recollections of those who lived through it, nimbus tells the story of an event that changed Minnesota forever.
