ABOUT THIS SHOW

Songwriter, poet, & folk activist David Huckfelt (formerly of The Pines) presents this first-ever, in-person preview of his new unannounced album slated for release in early 2026 with a special live listening concert at the Cedar.  Joined by dear friends & Minneapolis musician royalty The Unarmed Forces comprised of Jeremy Ylvisaker, J.T. Bates, and Mike Lewis, this special debut will be the first words sang or spoken from Huckfelt's newest project, his first since the 2021 release of "Room Enough, Time Enough".  As is always possible at Huckfelt's improvisational shows, special guests are likely to appear from the record, and the night will be opened by Minneapolis composer, lyricist, & singer Nona Invie (formerly of Dark Dark Dark).

David Huckfelt

David Huckfelt is a singer/ lyricist /activist and founding frontman of Minneapolis indie-folk cult favorites The Pines.  An Iowa native and former theology student, Huckfelt attended the Iowa Writers Workshop before dropping out and turning his attention to songwriting and performing in the storied folkie environs of Iowa City, IA.  With improvisational mastery, Huckfelt’s shows and songs of no-spiritual-surrender have earned him a devoted following from small-town opera houses & theaters to national festival stages like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Edmonton and Calgary Folk Fests, and the legendary First Avenue mainroom, sharing stages with Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris, Bon Iver, Gregory Alan Isakov, Trampled By Turtles & more.  An early encounter and collaboration with legendary Native American poet John Trudell introduced Huckfelt as friend & partner to an array of Indigenous artists & activists including Keith Secola, Louise Erdrich, Winona LaDuke, The Indigo Girls & Quiltman.  He also served as musical director and performer at “Water Is Life” music + resistance festival in Duluth, and his songs and those of his friends appear in the new Indigenous-directed AMC TV series “Dark Winds”.  Two brand new record projects await release in 2026 from Huckfelt's world of collaborators, the first of which, a collection of 15 cover songs from legendary songwriters both known & unknown, will be previewed at this Cedar show.  With roots in the same fertile Midwestern soil that produced legendary folk singers like John Prine and Greg Brown, David's new solo work preserves a rugged optimism that blasts through layers of dark in real time with songs that speak volumes, soft & clear.

Nona Invie

Nona Invie is a true artist's artist. For one, the singer, songwriter, composer, and pianist constantly reinvents their work. For the project Dark Dark Dark, Invie led a rootsy, yet sophisticated folk band integrating New Orleans jazz music. Their other work includes experimental synth-electronic music and a women’s choir. Invie is also a backup singer and keyboardist for indie singer-songwriter Angel Olsen.

Invie’s latest endeavor is a solo exploration. Their most personal and cathartic work yet, Self-soothing was created to help cope with difficult emotions. The expressive record’s slow tempo gives the music a spacious, immersive feel, surrounded by wide-ranging sonic textures accompanying Invie’s awe-inspiring voice. Outstanding tracks like “Forget My Name” and “Last of Our Shadow” underline the vulnerabilities and intensity of heartbreak.
