Have you ever heard of a Missouri Natural Area or had a chance to explore one? No? Did you know that Prairie State Park has the 3646 acre Regal Tallgrass Prairie Natural Area? "The Missouri Natural Areas Committee, whose mission is identifying, designating, managing and restoring the best remaining examples of natural communities and geological sites encompassing the full spectrum of Missouri's natural heritage."
Prairie State Park wants to bring Missouri's Natural Areas, and the wonderful diversity they contain, the attention they deserve. Prairie State Park will celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the 160 acre Hunkah Prairie Natural Area. It was designated on August 26, 1975 as a Natural Area. Join us for refreshments following the saunter at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center.
On August 23, 2025 join us for a Natural Area saunter on the 1.9 mile Path of the Earth People trail from 10:00 a.m. to noon. This trail traverses what was originally the Hunkah Prairie Natural area that predated the park. Visitors should consider bringing water, snacks, insect repellent, a hat, sunscreen, and wearing sturdy footwear.
Please meet at the Path of the Earth People trailhead on Central.

Due to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park, pets are not allowed on park trails, EXCEPT for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Bison graze freely in the park, and this regulation protects both you and your pet. You are welcome to bring your pet to the park’s campground and picnic area, but must follow Missouri State Parks' pet rules. This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting people with disabilities.
This event is free and open to the public, and there is no registration. For more information, call the nature center at 417-843-6711.
