If you seek the finest things in the world, you’ll inevitably end up with “Made in Japan,” as everyone knows well (laughs). In baseball, it’s Shohei Ohtani of the L.A. Dodgers; in boxing, it’s Monster Naoya Inoue; in cars, it’s Toyota—the list goes on and on. And the same thing is happening in the world of jazz.
New Orleans jazz is said to be the origin of jazz. Many Japanese jazz musicians cross the Pacific to hone their skills in New Orleans, Louisiana, while here in Tokyo, many young, talented jazz musicians dedicate their lives to New Orleans jazz.
Among them, clarinetist Makiko Tamura and trumpeter Maya Kawahara, both young women, are currently the most brilliant professional New Orleans jazz musicians in Japan. At their initiative, a spectacular seven-member band called the Beer Street Strutters has been formed.
This is their first live performance, where young Japanese professional musicians who passionately love New Orleans jazz—the root of the swing jazz we dance to—will recreate it in a fun, vibrant, and slightly nostalgic way, bringing the sound of 100 years ago into the present. “Let’s swing-dance!”
The venue is a historic jazz club in the heart of Tokyo’s Akasaka. This club doesn’t usually have a dance floor, but for this event, a special swing dance floor will be set up.
