Think of this as a combination of Trail Riding, XC jumping, stadium jumping and a Hunter Pace all rolled into one.
From 10am - 12pm, the 2-3 mile course will be open for schooling and track familiarization for teams of two or three participants to ride and school. (Yeah - you get to walk it while mounted BEFORE you compete. How great is that?) After schooling, you can decide whether you would like to ride in a “puddle jump” or “high flyers” group, which means the shoe jumping portion will be cross rails for the puddle jumpers and 2”+ for the flyers group just to add a bit of adrenaline for the experienced jumpers.
Around 12:30pm, teams will leave the start box together (teams separated every 3 minutes or so depending on attendance) and take on the course to see which team can come closest to optimum time. You will not be told optimum time. That’s the challenge!!! (Did I ride it fast? Did I ride my long strided greenie or my seasoned little sem-retired dude to set the time? 🤔) There will be about 15-20 Jumping efforts, all OPTIONAL, but heights ranging from 8” logs to beginner novice roll tops. (There’s nothing over 27 inches, most are 12-8 inches) There will be places on course you will need to walk to ensure safety and good horsemanship. Jumps include roll tops, logs, a hogsback,🪵coups, woodpiles, colorful stadium jumps, and faux brick 🧱walls. Unfortunately I don’t have a water complex or banks…..yet. You’ll be ducking branches, riding under canopies of large oaks and maples, twisting through some pines, trotting through a small grove of birch, and then out into an open field, but not in that order. 🌾Most of the course however is through the woods. 🌲🌳The trail will be well marked, so I promise you won’t get lost. Heck, you might even run into the resident bear, 🐻 but I doubt it. ;)
Team closest to optimum time (set by me) wins, and I’ll have REALLY pretty and big ribbons for each rider placing 1st thru 6th. If you don’t have a team, come anyway!! I will let experienced adults ride solo - but that is up to the discretion of the judge - me. Course stewards will be out on course with radios to ensure everyone is having fun and being safe.
Safety vests strongly recommended if you plan on jumping anything. Helmets REQUIRED if you’re under 18. ALL DISCIPLINES WELCOME!
Cost is $75 per rider. If you stay afterwards to school more or would like to run part or all of the course at different heights, that’s $15 extra. The usual negative coggins and signed waivers are required BEFORE mounting a horse.

This will be my second derby- first one last year was awesome. I’ve watched clips of people in Great Britain jumping through the woods on these ridiculously cute ponies, and thought, THIS is what I want to do. Come join us!
