Type: Guided Flatwater Paddling Tour
Access: Restricted Area (Ranger Led Access Only)
Equipment: BYO Boat Only (No Rentals Available)
Experience the untouched beauty of the Mississippi River floodplain from the best vantage point possible—the water level. Join Ranger Demetriou for an exclusive paddling tour of Eagle Lake, a secluded oxbow rich in history and wildlife.
Because this lake is a protected refuge located outside the main park boundaries, access is strictly limited to this guided group. You will caravan behind the Ranger to the gated entrance and launch your own vessel for a peaceful journey through ancient cypress groves.
Critical Equipment Requirements
Bring Your Own Boat: You must bring your own canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP). There are no rentals available for this off-site tour.
Life Jackets are Mandatory: Coast Guard-approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) must be worn at all times while on the water.
Launch Details: Be prepared for a natural, unimproved launch site. You must be able to carry/drag your vessel a short distance to the water's edge.
Tour Highlights
Cypress Sloughs: Paddle through a maze of massive Bald Cypress and Water Tupelo trees. The calm waters of the oxbow make for easy paddling, perfect for photography and observation.
Wildlife Viewing: Without the noise of a motor, you can quietly approach wading birds, spot turtles basking on logs, and scan the treeline for Barred Owls and Bald Eagles.
Guided Interpretation: Learn about the hydraulic forces that created this oxbow lake and the diverse aquatic ecosystem that thrives within it.
