Panelists:

- Andy Clarke (Wine Australia)
- Glenn Perkins (Biohub)
What happens on the vine gets a lot of attention in the vineyards, pruning, thinning, tucking, trimming, picking…. The list goes on. But what’s happening under the vines? How we manage the undervine area is perhaps the most important frontier in viticulture today as we tackle climate change while simultaneously chasing both quality improvements and efficiency.
Sounds like a tall ask? Well, there is no singular magic silver bullet, but today’s panel will bring to the table a whole raft of new ideas and techniques for achieving all this and more, no matter what kind of growing region you’re in. Our panel of industry leading scientists, practitioners and agtech experts from across Australia will be sharing with us all the ways they monitor, manage and enhance the ecosystem below the vine, both above and below ground, to boost soil and vine health with less inputs and positive environmental outcomes.
Session 3: NoLo Nous
Panel Host: Leanne Altmann
What’s the go with NoLo? It’s a growing category, when many others in the wine world are shrinking. This alone should demand attention. But how do we feel about wine with no alcohol? Is it just what the doctor ordered? Well – yes, according to the World Health Organisation. However, for all of us in this room there is so much more to wine that it’s alcoholic content. It is an artisan creation, grown not made, with a rich (agri)cultural history woven throughout modern civilisation and a centrepiece of centuries of coviviality. So how do we bring together what we love about wine with the social responsibility to offer characterful, expressive and delicious wine(ish) options for everyone?
This session will delve into the category from a making, marketing and sipping perspective. How does the winemaker tackle the task? What are the available technologies and how do winemakers access them? And what do the consumers want? Most importantly, is this a unique option for the Alternative Variety wine scene to add another string to our bow? After all, we have been bringing adventurous new flavours and styles to the wine bars and dinner tables of Australia for decades now. Who could be better placed to take the leap?
Spaces are limited. Don’t miss this chance to learn, taste, and connect with the innovators behind Australia’s alternative wine scene.
