TWELVE DAYS OF TERROR ON THE JERSEY SHORE
WITH SHART RESEARCH INSTITUTE CONSERVATION DIRECTOR, DAVE GRANT.
Between July 1 and 12, 1916, five beachgoers were attacked by sharks along the coast of New Jersey, and this remains one of history’s most notorious interactions between sharks and people. We will explore the Shark Research Institute’s records of these incidents and others, review some of the facts and fallacies about sharks, and examine the Institute’s research studies on whale sharks.
Our program leader Dave has presented teacher-training materials in every coastal state and overseas. He is currently the Conservation Director at the Shark Research Institute in Princeton, NJ, and is the former Director of the Brookdale College Ocean Institute at Sandy Hook. When not teaching or researching, Dave spends his summer breaks working as crew, lecturer, and scientist-in-residence on NOAA expedition vessels and on winter breaks on expedition cruises in Antarctica.
