The Northwest Mesemb Show has been a fixture in the northern cactus and succulent calendar for over 30 years. Originally conceived by Mid Cheshire branch, it is now under the management of Manchester branch. Today, this show stands out as the only competitive event in the entire British Isles dedicated exclusively to the Mesembryanthemaceae.
In contrast to cacti, which are found throughout the Americas, and other succulents that naturally grow in most Mediterranean and tropical regions worldwide, about 95% of all mesembs grow in southern Africa, primarily South Africa and Namibia. Some have been introduced to the Mediterranean countries by humans, but they do not naturally occur there, even though they flourish in those conditions.
This year, we are especially pleased to welcome Catherine Arthurs as our guest speaker. Catherine usually lives in Spain but visits family here several times a year. She has extensive experience growing mesembs and has explored many habitats in southern Africa. She is also the new editor of the Mesemb Study Group magazine and will be judging the show this year, which is a great honour for us.
Several vendors will be present, offering a wide variety of cacti and other succulent plants. In addition, a good selection of refreshments will be available from our dedicated kitchen staff.
We encourage you to enter this show, even if you only have one plant to exhibit; and if perhaps you don't grow mesembs, do please come along anyway and enjoy the many remarkable plants on display. Every entry, and every attendance, helps support the continuation of this important event.
