Explore the incredible history on the fringes of Merthyr Tydfil.
This circular walk is 9 miles long so not for the faint hearted. The history and the views however make it absolutely worth it.
We set off from a landscape scared by the Industrial Revolution to one of megolothic burials and standing stones. Views extend beyond the iconic reservoir at Pontsticill, deep into the Bannau Brychiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. It also intersects with the Brecon Mountain Railway which still keeps steam locomotion alive in the region. And if you are a rail enthusiast, the theme continues when we walk a section of the Brecon Merthyr Railway over the famous Pontsarn Viaduct.
We visit the remains of a church founded in the 9th Century where we see the grave of Robert Thompson Crawshay. An industrialist so cruel his grave bears the epitaph “God forgive me”. We also visit the remains of the 13th C Morlais Castle.
A real kaleidoscope of history amongst the rocky moors, high above a town built on Iron.
