“The Devil’s Pulpit & Other Mostly True Scottish Misadventures” is what happens when two writers, one Black, the other White, both living in Oregon with roots in Appalachia, decide to pursue graduate degrees in Scotland. You’re invited to meet poet E.J. Wade and author Karen Spears Zacharias, who will speak at Moon Lake Library, Monday, October 27 at 6:30 PM.
Their collaboration tracks their adventures through Scotland where they collected stories and memories. “The Devil’s Pulpit,” according to their publisher, “is part travelogue, part memoir, part poetry, and in outlandish Scottish storytelling tradition, a wee bit of winging it. Somewhere along Scotland's northernmost tip to its southernmost brigs, they forged a friendship that defies generations of racial animosity. At its heart, this collection is the rediscovery of friendships first formed through studying and mucking about.”
E.J Wade has been published in the Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Women Speak, the New Ohio Review, Salvation South, and Callaloo Journal. She serves as literary editor for the Anthology of Appalachian Writers and has been nominated for the Pushcart Award three times. Wade holds a Doctor of Education in Disability and Equity in Education and an MA in Appalachian Studies from Shepherd University as well as an MA in Creative Media Practices from the University of The West of Scotland.
Library patrons will remember Karen Spears Zacharias from her visit early in 2024 when she discussed her book “No Perfect Mothers,” a novel about forced sterilization of women deemed unfit to have children. Zacharias’s books focus on women and justice. She holds an MA in Appalachian Studies from Shepherd University and an MA in Creative Media Practices from the University of the West of Scotland. Among her other publications are “The Murder Gene,” “Will Jesus Buy Me a Double-Wide?” and “After the Flag’s Been Folded,” remembering her father, an American soldier killed in Vietnam.
If you’ve ever imagined exploring the countryside of Scotland by ScotRail, in search of Highland cows, fairies, and stories, come hear these two writers who managed to do just that. The program on October 27 at 6:30 is free and open to the public. Additional library parking is available on the grass beside the library as well as in the Moon Lake Campus lot around the corner.
