Join us outside to enjoy enchanting Japanese folktales with the storyteller Megumi!
Savor the Japanese culture, as Megumi shares her favorite tales of whimsical, greedy, and generous spirits, goblins, animals and human beings.
About Megumi:
Born in Illinois, but raised in Japan for 7 years (ages 3-10) and California (age 10 on) by a Japanese mother and a European American father, Grace “Megumi” Fleming grew up as the oldest of five children. She adapted to this bicultural, bilingual, and turbulent family by emulating role models in real life and in stories.
Megumi delights in telling Japanese folktales she fondly remembers from her childhood. She is also passionate about telling World War II Japanese American Internment Camp narratives based on dozens of interviews she has conducted with former internees.
About Storytelling:
- Storytelling is telling stories, without using a book.
- It’s an ancient art form that predates libraries, and books and writing.
- It’s not necessarily for children!
- Traditional-style storytelling creates unique images in the mind of each listener.
According to the National Storytelling Network, “storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story while encouraging the listener’s imagination. In storytelling, the listener imagines the story.”
