You know you like Scotch… but do you really know your type?
This guided tasting is part flavor adventure, part palate personality test. We’ll explore three distinct Scotch whisky worlds — Single Malt, Blended Malt, and Single Grain — along with their blended cousins. Each style has its own vibe, backstory, and flavor fingerprint.
By the end, you’ll know:
Which style sings to your soul
Which style plays well with others
And which style makes you go “Where have you been all my life?”
Round 1: The Single Malt
Definition: 100% malted barley, from one distillery. No wheat, no corn — just barley and the distillery’s house style shining through.
Personality: Rich, distinctive, and unapologetically itself.
Why you might love it: You’re into bold character and you want to taste the place it comes from.
* Glenlivet 12 – Light, floral, and perfect for new explorers
Round 2: The Blended Malt
Definition: A blend of single malts from different distilleries. Still 100% malted barley, but multiple distillery styles working together.
Personality: The “supergroup” band of Scotch — harmony and complexity in one bottle.
Why you might love it: You like layers of flavor and a balance of multiple influences
* Johnnie Walker Green Label – smooth, complex, and crafted from single malts across Scotland for layers of fresh herbs, smoke, and ripe fruit.
Round 3: The Single Grain
Definition: Made at one distillery from cereals other than malted barley (often wheat, corn, or a mix), typically in a column still.
Personality: Smooth, mellow, sometimes almost bourbon-like.
Why you might love it: You prefer lighter, subtler flavors and a silky texture.
* Loch Lomond Coffey Still Single Grain – Distiller’s Choice – distilled entirely from malted barley, but because it’s done using a Coffey still it’s classed as ‘single grain’! Aged in a selection of both first-fill and second-fill American oak bourbon barrels, it has layers of elegant fruit and floral character. A velvety mouthfeel brings red berries, crumbly fudge, vanilla, and cinnamon.
Bonus Round: The Blended Grain
Definition: A blend of grain whiskies from multiple distilleries.
Personality: The smooth operator — delicate, soft, and great for easy sipping.
Why you might love it: You like creamy sweetness with almost no bite.
* Nikka “Coffey Grain” (Japanese but same style) – Tropical fruit and caramel.
