Join us at the McGregor Historical Museum on Sunday, October 12th at 1:00 PM as we welcome local historian and author Mary Elise Antoine for a fascinating presentation on the short-lived but significant Winnebago School on the Yellow River (1834β1840).
Following the 1832 treaty at Rock Island, the U.S. government promised the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) people a new home on the Neutral Ground and the construction of a school with farmland along the Yellow River. The school opened in 1834 under Rev. David Loweryβs direction, offering clothing, food, and education to Native children. It closed just six years laterβbut its story reveals much about federal policies, local history, and the lives of those who attended and worked there.
