The Twelve Days of Colonial Christmas
Celebrating Life in the Revolutionary Era Carolina Foothills
Presented by Patricia Cooper Baker
Winter holiday celebrations in the Carolina Foothills were shaped by cultural expectations, geographic limitations, and the Revolutionary War. During our gathering on Dec. 4, 2025, we will take a look at all three as we attempt to answer these questions:
· During the Revolutionary War, how did Christmas differ across our various religious groups and countries of origin?
· Where Christmas or Yuletide were celebrated, what were the practices of home decoration, gift-giving, food, celebrations, and entertainment, and how did the War for Independence impact that?
· What do we know about how George Washington celebrated Christmas?
· How difficult was the colonial life of a foothills wife?
· How have local holiday recipes and customs changed as recently the 20th century?
