Join us for “Antifascism and Literature: A Woman of Letters and Her Fight for Democracy”, an evening honoring the remarkable life and legacy of Barbara Probst Solomon.
This special event will include a screening of the documentary “When the War Was Over”, followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion moderated by renowned essayist Daphne Merkin.
Barbara Probst Solomon (1928–2019) was a fiercely independent voice in American letters—novelist, essayist, journalist, and documentarian—whose life and work bridged continents and causes. After a privileged New York City upbringing, she got herself to Paris just after World War II and joined the underground struggle against Franco’s regime, eventually becoming a key figure in the resistance. After Franco’s death she became a frequent contributor to both Spanish and U.S. media publications, including El País, Cambio 16, The New York Times, The New Republic, and The New Yorker—where her unique amalgam of journalistic observation, incisive cosmopolitan sensibility, and vividly personal voice bridged a gap of cultural perspective between the two countries, rooted in Spain’s years of political isolation. Threaded throughout Probst Solomon’s writing and her documentary film When The War Was Over is an unwavering commitment to freedom and democratic ideals.
An invitation with full details is coming soon.
