About the event

An Evening with History
Please join Flight Crew in welcoming K-State professors Phil Tiemeyer, Dr. Nadia Oweidat, and Dr. Michael Krysko on the release of their new books! On November 6th from 5:30-7:30PM, we’ll be hosting a special event featuring interviews with the authors about their latest works and inspiration behind them. Come enjoy an evening with great conversation, community, and creativity!

Phil Tiemeyer is an Associate Professor in History and the Director of Security and Studies at Kansas State University. His book, Women and the Jet Age: A Global History of Aviation and Flight Attendants (Cornell University Press, July 2025), explores how the Cold War era fueled the global expansion of airlines and civil aviation. It highlights how countries like socialist Yugoslavia and postcolonial Jamaica used aviation to assert modernity and claim a place in the cosmopolitan world beyond Western dominance.
Dr. Nadia Oweidat is an Assistant Professor in History at Kansas State University and earned her D.Phil in Oriental Studies from the University of Oxford in 2014. Her book, Reform and Its Perils in Contemporary Islam: The Case of Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd (2024, Oxford University Press), explores Muslim intellectuals’ efforts to reconcile Islam with liberal values such as equality and freedom of thought. Using Abu Zayd as a case study, it examines the promises and challenges of liberalizing Islamic thought amid political oppression, religious intolerance, and internal intellectual debates.
Dr. Michael Krysko is an Associate Professor for the National Endowment for the Humanities Faculty in Military History and Twentieth Century Studies at Kansas State University and earned his Ph.D at Stony Brook University in 2001. His book, Contested Airwaves: American Radio at Home and Abroad, 1914-1946 (University of Illinois Press, 2025), explores how radio shaped American attitudes toward identity and nationalism during the World Wars.
