Franz Schubert's sacred music for choir and orchestra carries the torch of Viennese Classicism passed to him by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. First written in 1816 at age 19, it has many hallmarks of Schubert's particular brand of classicism, including a sense of melody that seems effortless, careful texturing, balance, and a lightness of touch. The work became one of his favorites, and he revised and perfected it over the course of a decade before it became the only Mass published during his lifetime.
