About the event

The Annual Teddy Chester Lecture
This years lecture will be delivered by Professor Henrietta Hughes OBE, the inaugural Patient Safety Commissioner for England.

About this Event

The lecture will focus on the importance and value of listening to patients within the healthcare system.

titled First Do No Harm was published in 2020 and highlighted the experience of patients and families who have been harmed through the use of medicines and medical devices.

Baroness Cumberlege described the healthcare system at the time as slow and siloed. She made a series of recommendations including a new role, the Patient Safety Commissioner.

Professor Hughes started in this role in September 2022. The Commissioner role is an independent public appointment to act as a champion for patients, elevating their voices into the heart of government to lead to positive change.

The inaugural term of the first Patient Safety Commissioner in the world has show that change can happen when the entirety of the healthcare system works together to listen to patients and work in partnership to keep them safe.
