This 10-week program is open to drop-in attendance; however, it is recommended that you attend all ten weeks, as each session builds upon the last.
New Friends is a joyful, 10-week music class designed for children ages 0–6 and the adults who love them. Through singing, movement, listening, and play, families will explore a vibrant collection of folk songs and chants from around the world, introducing young children to the roots of our shared musical heritage while celebrating many cultures and traditions.
The early years are a remarkable time for language and musical development. In this class, children learn the way they naturally do: by listening first, then experimenting with their own voices and bodies. Simple, playful activities, like songs with repetition, call-and-response, finger plays, movement games, and gentle storytelling, invite children to participate at their own pace, building confidence and joy in making music.
Each class is a rich sensory experience. Children will sing familiar favorites like I’m a Little Teapot alongside new songs, move their bodies through guided activities that build coordination and impulse control, listen to high-quality recordings made with acoustic instruments, and explore sound by playing child-friendly instruments such as drums, rhythm sticks, jingles, and resonator bars. Scarves, hoops, and other props add an extra layer of movement and imagination.
Patterns of rhythm and melody are woven throughout every session, helping children develop early musical “vocabulary” while supporting language, listening, and brain development. Whether your child sings boldly, echoes quietly, or simply listens and absorbs, all responses are welcome.
Come make music, move together, and make new friends—one song at a time.
