Each year at income tax time, AARP offers free tax preparation. Although emphasis is placed on low- to middle-income taxpayers and older taxpayers, there are no income or age limits for this free service. There are, however, some limits on complexity. The AARP will be taking appointments at the Library on Fridays from 9 am to 11 am, February 6 through April 10.
Starting January 15, appointments can be made by calling 802-753-0291, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
You must live and work in Vermont to be eligible for services. Prior to the appointment time, please fill out an intake form. If needed, the intake forms can be picked up at the Library Help Desk. Please bring the completed intake form, filled out in ink, together with all required documents to your appointment (see list below).
The following personal documents are required:
Valid photo ID
Copies of last year’s federal and state income tax returns
Social Security cards for yourself, your spouse, and all dependents
Income statements: W2 forms from each employer, social security SSA-1099 (statement with pink Box 5), all other 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B, 1099-MISC, 1099-R, and HSA forms
Unemployment compensation statements
Dependent daycare information (provider name, address, SS or EIN number)
Personal check showing routing and account numbers for direct debit or deposit, or documentation of savings account numbers
2025-2026 local property tax bills
Healthcare document: 1095-A (if applicable)
Names, social security numbers, and dollar amounts of income of all wage earners living in your home
All IRS and VT tax dept. letters (received in 2025)
If you are married, filing jointly, both people must be present to sign the tax return.
