Community of Practice: Evidence for Regulators

We are planning an in-person workshop on Wednesday 15th October 1-4pm in Manchester on the topic “Use of causal AI to support better guidelines for patients with multiple long-term conditions and polypharmacy”.

Decisions concerning treatment for patients are made based on disease-centric evidence and guidelines, originating in RCTs or simple analyses of observational data. In practice, decisions need to be made for patients with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) and polypharmacy (taking multiple medications). The existing evidence is therefore not always sufficient. This workshop aims to initialise a community of practice that will address that gap by bringing together a community to tackle the key challenges of: 1) moving from a disease-centric to a person-centric approach to guidelines and treatment, and 2) using causal AI to extrapolate evidence from selected populations that are not a good match to the population of interest (e.g., exclusion of patients with MLTC from trials).

This will be a half-day event, in-person, on Wednesday 15th October 1-4pm in Manchester in based in the Pankhurst Building. It will bring together individuals from a range of backgrounds, including AI experts, patients, clinicians, and epidemiologists. We expect that outcomes of the event will include new collaborations, potential position paper(s), and plans for future funding applications.
