A common challenge faced by osteopathic students is the lack of clarity regarding the appropriate application of the diverse techniques they learn. Osteopathic students are taught a wide range of techniques, but it is often unclear when these techniques should be applied. Over the past two decades, there has been a shift away from precision in osteopathic diagnosis, leaving students uncertain about where and how to apply techniques to resolve symptoms.
In this workshop, we will cover the history of the osteopathic lesion, its evolution to somatic dysfunction, and its relevance to physical examination. We will discuss how to examine all the body regions quickly and efficiently. We will discuss the hierarchy of somatic dysfunctions, how to name them, and how to determine the primary lesion in the body. We will primarily focus on the spine but will demonstrate the cranial and visceral screens.
Once confidence is gained in making an osteopathic diagnosis, we will explore direct and indirect techniques.
Michael Pye graduated from the ESO in 1995 and has been practicing privately ever since. He has served as a lecturer and clinic tutor at the ESO and was the inaugural director of the women’s health clinic.
Furthermore, Michael has extensively taught at the postgraduate level in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe, Russia, Japan, and New Zealand. He is an examiner and faculty member for the Molinari Institute of Health’s women’s health postgraduate diploma and was subsequently made a fellow of the institute.
In recent years, Michael has also established an animal clinic alongside his human clinic after training with Stuart McGregor through the UCO. He dedicates one day per week to treating horses and dogs. This experience has enhanced his human practice, particularly sharpening the palpatory aspects of osteopathic diagnosis, which he enjoys sharing in his lectures.
