In 1860, Eliza Winston became the first and only enslaved person to successfully fight for her freedom in a Minnesota courtroom. In It Took Courage, author Christopher P. Lehman sets the record straight, separating fact from fiction and showcasing Eliza Winston’s remarkable battle for freedom. Join your library to hear from the author about his process writing the book, methods of research and get an overview of the people and places involved in Eliza Winston’s enslavement, and how slavery existed in Minnesota.
