Madison's hardest working Bluegrass band, Soggy Prairie, is proud to host the Madison Bluegrass Roundabout, a monthly Tuesday night series highlighting Southern Wisconsin's Bluegrass scene. The series will feature new and upcoming bands, as well as well-established groups. Each month will feature a set from Soggy Prairie followed by a set from a guest band.
The fourteenth installment of the MBR highlights a long-time Madison favorite, The NO NAME STRING BAND.
The No Name String Band music collective distills the heart of old time fiddle music, jazz/funk improvisation, latin rhythms – with a dram of classical discipline – into their uniquely new time sound. The NNSB spins their own groove on light-footed and hard-driving barn dance tunes of the American south, while slowing down to explore more introspective original compositions.
As a collective, the NNSB shows the flexibility to play true to tradition, especially in smaller configurations, or get funky as more pieces are added to the puzzle. A wider picture emerges when the full compliment of one or two fiddles, banjos, and guitars, along with upright and percussion are on hand. While they only rarely take an instrumental lead in the usual sense, the focus flows between bandmates like a chamber ensemble, at times highlighting the syncopated interplay of banjos, soaring fiddle harmonies or sly guitar runs, other times focusing on the hip shaking grooves carved out by the percussive bass and complex cajon or reco reco.
You might have seen the NNSB anywhere from a festival or opera house stage, pizza place, coffeshop or barroom corner, a clam shell at an oyster house, in a car dealership showroom (or inside a Mini Cooper), on a brewery or distillery floor, beneath the trees at a farmer's market, state or local park, or lakeside at a student union or boathouse, in a grade school gym or university classroom, at an art gallery or children's museum, in a bank vault, at a wedding, anniversary or birthday party, in an elevator, in a barn (of course!), opening for a bluegrass hall of farmer, or in a friend's backyard. Wherever you find them, their motto is simple:
New Time – Old Time - Any Time - All the Time
