Fuji: The Making of a Global Mountain

Mount Fuji commands attention. Visible to millions in Tokyo, its iconic silhouette is recognizable around the world. At the same time, industries and military bases located on and around the mountain connect it to economic and political networks with global reach. By examining both the representation and material exploitation of Fuji over the past several hundred years, this talk will show how Japan's premier mountain has become an especially potent, multi-faceted, and far-reaching contributor to our material and imagined worlds.

Andrew Bernstein is professor of history at Lewis and Clark College. He is the author of Fuji: A Mountain in the Making (Princeton University Press, 2025) and Modern Passings: Death Rites, Politics, and Social Change in Imperial Japan (University of Hawaii Press, 2006).
