Coaching In-Depth: Team Coaching
Recent years have seen a shift toward team coaching, in which coaches work with data teams, PLCs, grade-level teams, or departments rather than exclusively with individual teachers. While this shift is often attributed to budget constraints and reductions in coaching staff, it reflects more than a search for efficiency. There are compelling instructional and organizational reasons to coach teams. When done well, team coaching can strengthen shared understanding of high-quality instruction, support teacher collaboration and sensemaking, and build the conditions for more coherent and sustainable improvement. In this workshop, we will examine team coaching as a core component of a district strategy for instructional improvement, exploring what it requires of coaches and how it differs—conceptually and practically—from traditional one-on-one models.
