The Fourth Annual Booyah Bash! Beware, the fourth is strong in this one...
If you don't know, a Booyah is a large communal stew very popular in the Green Bay area, but that also enjoys popularity in parts of south St Paul. Usually simmered for a whole day in gigantic kettles of 20-60 gallons, a Booyah is a fantastic opportunity for community and good food.
Booyah itself is not a vegan meal. We will have a vegan option available (West African-Inspired Peanut Stew) for those who need it. Please give us a heads up if you plan on eating the vegan option, so that we can be sure to have enough!
Bellen will arrive at the park around 6 AM, and stay all day on October 25th simmering the Booyah. You can come anytime, but we recommend starting at noon to hang out! There are large fields for yard games or Frisbee, picnic tables for table games, volleyball courts, and play structures for kiddos. The Booyah should be ready for devouring around 4-5PM.
In a perfect world, we could provide 20 gallons of delightful stew free-of-charge. Unfortunately, that requires a lot of ingredients, so we will be asking attendees to help cover the cost of ingredients per serving. We will serve Booyah by the pint, which is a largish regular-sized bowl of stew. The cost will be posted closer to the event. Last year's was $1.80/pint, for reference. If you live in town, feel free to bring tupperware to bring some Booyah home! That is a classic Booyah attendee move.
There will be no ordering in advance again this year. Instead, we will simply make sure everyone is served a dinner portion first, then we will open the floor up for leftovers.
This will be a BYOB (Bring Your Own Bowl), BYOS (Bring Your Own Spoon), and BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage) event. We also encourage you to bring your own condiments/sides! We heard a lot of awesome ideas for accompaniments (hot sauce, cotija cheese, bacon bits, baguettes, etc.). While we cannot include all of these with the base dish, it would be great to see a little buffet of complements for the dish! The oyster crackers will be provided by us, as they are the traditional topping.
We know not everyone invited lives in Madison, and it might be a longshot for some people to attend, but it would be a joy to see all of you at the Booyah Bash! Please invite anyone you know and/or like to this event! If we get enough attendees, it can give us an excuse to purchase a 40 gallon kettle.
We will have the indoor portion of the park shelter reserved again, just in case the cold of Late October is too harsh. Please feel free to also bring any games you would like to play in that indoor portion or blankets to keep you feeling cozy. We also encourage off-the-cuff entertainment of any kind: music, juggling, poetry, professional wrestling, snake charming, etc.
