Lloyd Cole begon als frontman van The Commotions en bracht enkele van de meest iconische popsongs uit de jaren 80 uit. Samen brachten ze drie albums uit, waarvan debuut Rattlesnakes veruit het bekendste is. De titeltrack en Perfect Skin waren in volle postpunkperiode hits. Na de split van de band in 1987 trekt Cole naar New York om een solocarrière op te starten.
Cole’s karakteristieke stem, zijn geletterde teksten, ongegeneerd romantische houding en talent voor sierlijke melodieën vormen de basis van zijn muziek.
Lloyd Cole bracht zijn twaalfde album als soloartiest uit. Het album draagt de titel On Pain en bevat acht gloednieuwe nummers met de typische Lloyd Cole-flair. On Pain bracht hem een stap dichter bij synthpop, waarin hij nieuwe methodes, en nieuwe geluiden onderzoekt. Ook voormalig Commotions Clark en Cowan hielpen mee, ze schreven samen vier van de acht nummers van het album.
