For a young American sailor on assignment in Nagasaki, Japan, it was just a passing, exotic love affair. But the young local girl fell deeply in love. For her, it was a lifetime commitment, a real marriage. It was also a ticket to a new life, offering an escape from the rigid society which had shamed her father and impoverished her family.
Then he leaves. Against all logic, Madame Butterfly waits for his return, sure that he will take her away to a new life in America. For three years, she refuses all help and turns away all her wealthy and ardent suitors.
