About the event

Intro to Encaustic with Pam Winegard
Join us for a 3-hour introductory workshop on encaustic painting, an ancient art form that combines molten beeswax with pigment to create luminous, layered works of art. Instructor Pamela Winegard will guide participants through the foundational techniques of encaustic painting, including fusing, layering, and texturing. This hands-on session offers an opportunity to explore the unique properties and expressive potential of this versatile medium in a supportive studio environment. No prior experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. Space is limited to 8 participants—reserve your spot today!

🧰 Tools & Materials
All necessary tools and materials will be provided and are included in the cost of the workshop. Optional: participants may choose to bring one or more small pieces of art (watercolor, collage, mixed media, no larger than 8”x8”) to use for the project.

🔥What is encaustic?
Encaustic is an ancient painting technique that uses heated beeswax mixed with colored pigments. The name comes from the Greek word enkaustikos, meaning “to burn in,” which refers to the process of fusing the wax layers with heat. Artists apply the melted wax to a surface—traditionally wood—then use tools and heat (like torches or heat guns) to manipulate the wax, build up texture, embed materials, and create depth.

Texture & Depth: Encaustic allows for rich surface textures and luminous, layered effects that are hard to achieve with other mediums.

Versatility: It can be combined with collage, photography, drawing, and found objects, making it ideal for mixed media artists.

Permanence: Once cooled and cured, encaustic is incredibly durable and archival—it doesn’t yellow or crack over time.

Sensory Experience: Working with warm, fragrant beeswax is a tactile and immersive process that many artists find deeply engaging and even meditative.

Creative Freedom: The medium invites experimentation—mistakes can be reworked or scraped away, encouraging playful exploration.

Encaustic bridges painting, sculpture, and collage, making it a favorite for artists who love working hands-on with their materials.
